Waldon Athletic v Dartmouth AFC
George Belli Cup
Waldon Athletic 4 (Grinstall 45, McKendrock 57, Pennicotte 120+2, Rielly 120+2)
Dartmouth 3 (Webber 25, Baker 44, C.Smith 107)
Best team Waldon grab late deserved winner.
On a cold Saturday in January with plenty of games falling foul to the weather Waldon survived on a very wet and windy Windmill
Hill where they faced a tough cup match against high flying Dartmouth.
As the match began Waldon started the better team with the best attacking spells of the game but whilst boasting a strong attack
it was their defence that let them down as twenty five minutes into the match Dartmouth took an unexpected lead. Karl Baker
flicked a ball accross the box to his teammate Josh Webber who smashed a volley off the back of teammate Fred Smith and over
the Waldon keeper Kitson Glanville into the back of the net.
This was a lead that very much came against the run of play and some sloppy defending by the hosts on the stroke of half time
saw Dartmouth double their lead as Karl Baker found himself one on one before tucking the ball past the home keeper Glanville.
As it looked like the teams were going to go into the break with two goals between them Waldon managed to pull one back as
Jake Grinstall tapped a cross into the back of the net from close range.
Waldon came out in the second half looking for an equaliser and they didn't give Dartmouth a sniff of the ball as they were
the much better team having attack after attack. This attacking play soon paid off as twelve minutes into the half Liam McKendrock
managed to squeeze the ball into the net from inside the box.
With the minutes of the half ticking away with attack after attack Waldon were unlucky not to get a winner and in the very last
minute Dartmouth's Charlie Smith headed over the bar from a situation that looked easier to score from a few yards out.
Neither team could find a winner in normal time and an extra thirty minutes of football on a very cold day was needed much
to the disappointment of the freezing cold fans who wanted to go home and get warm again.
In extra time and it was Dartmouth who struck first as two minutes into the second half Charlie Smith slammed the ball into
the back of the net from inside of the box and this led to many complaints from Waldon who felt hard done by as they thought
the ball had gone out of play in the build up.
As the half drew towards an end it looked like Dartmouth had snatched a win after being outplayed for most of the match but Waldon had a surprise up their sleeves. As the match entered the one hundred and twenty first minute the hosts were still trailing
but a Thomas Pennicotte strike into the bottom corner sent the game to penalties.
Well that is what everyone thought but the match wasn't over as just thirty seconds later Brian Doughty headed home from close
range from a Rielly cross sending the Waldon management team nuts on the sidelines.
A match where the best team won in a late drama in what was a match that not even the great William Shakespeare could have scripted.
